Best practices for using DiSC

DiSC has many uses be it individual growth, team cohesion, leading, or managing.  Check out our best practices based on many years of using DiSC in various environments.

Getting Started

Understand your DiSC style

  • We like to say "sit with your style."   Meaning get comfortable with your profile
  • Understand what it says.
  • We always suggest printing a copy or doing a digital mark up,  underline the things that are totally you, X out the things that are not you, put a question mark ? next to the things you are not sure of.

Pay attention to how your communicate with others

  • Do you stay in your own style?
  • Do you meet others where they are in their style?

Check in with others

  • Check in with others to confirm the things you are unsure of (remember the profile is not 100% you, it know knows how you answered a set of questions.)

Flex your style

Try connecting with others in their styles; for example,  if you are an I-style and chatting with a D-style flex your communication muscles to connect with them using their preferences.

Share the news

Have open conversations with your peers on your preferences and learning theirs.

Best Practices for Planning a teams or Group program

Select your target group

  • Identify the Specific Team or Group: Understand who will be participating. Is it a department, a project team, or cross-functional groups?
  • Assess the Group's Composition: Consider the diversity in terms of roles, seniority, and areas of expertise to tailor the program effectively.
  • Determine the Size of the Group: Size impacts logistics, interaction, and personalization of the experience.

Understand your goals for teambuilding

  • Clarify Desired Outcomes: Define what success looks like post-teambuilding, such as improved communication or collaboration.
  • Identify Current Challenges: Understanding existing issues helps in tailoring the program to address these directly.
  • Consult Stakeholders: Engage with team leaders or members to align the program with their expectations and needs.

Learn how DiSC can support those goals

  • Explore DiSC Framework: Familiarize yourself with the DiSC model and how it can reveal insights into personal and team dynamics.
  • Match DiSC Tools to Objectives: Select from the Everything DiSC® suite (e.g., Workplace, Management, Productive Conflict) based on your goals.
  • Leverage DiSC for Actionable Insights: Understand how DiSC can provide practical strategies for enhancing teamwork and reducing conflict.

Goals for the Team

  • Set Specific, Measurable Goals: Goals could range from enhancing mutual understanding to developing a more cohesive strategy for conflict resolution.
  • Align Goals with Organizational Objectives: Ensure that the teambuilding supports broader organizational aims, such as culture change or leadership development.
  • Create a Follow-Up Plan: Establish how progress towards these goals will be measured and sustained over time.

On-site, Off-site, or Virtual

  • Consider the Pros and Cons: On-site may be more convenient and cost-effective, while off-site can provide a neutral space free from daily distractions.
  • Factor in Logistics: Assess accessibility, facilities, and the ability to create an engaging learning environment.
  • Align with Program Objectives: Choose a setting that supports your goals, whether it's fostering creativity, confidentiality, or collaboration.

Is the DiSC session part of something larger

  • Integrate with Wider Initiatives: Ensure the DiSC session complements ongoing team or leadership development programs.
  • Communicate the Connection: Help participants understand how the DiSC session fits into their broader professional development journey.
  • Leverage Synergies: Identify opportunities where insights from the DiSC session can enhance other initiatives, such as mentoring programs or strategic planning retreats.

By considering these aspects, you can create a team or group program that is not only insightful and engaging but also deeply aligned with your organizational goals and the specific needs of the participants.

BEST PRACTICES FOR USINGS DISC WITH TEAMS

Set expectations in the room

  • Clarify Objectives Early: Begin by clearly outlining the goals and objectives of the session. This helps align everyone's expectations and fosters a shared commitment to the process.
  • Establish Ground Rules: Create a safe and respectful environment by setting ground rules for engagement. This might include confidentiality, active participation, and respect for diverse perspectives.
  • Role of Facilitator: Define your role as a facilitator - guiding discussions, providing insights, and keeping the group focused on objectives.

Create space for open dialogue

  • Encourage Participation: Use techniques to ensure all voices are heard, such as round-robin sharing, small group discussions, and open questions.
  • Foster Respectful Listening: Encourage participants to listen actively and respectfully, valuing each other's contributions as much as their own.
  • Handle Conflicts Constructively: Equip yourself with strategies to navigate and mediate conflicts that may arise, turning them into opportunities for growth and learning.

  • Provide Resources: Offer tools, further reading, or follow-up sessions to support ongoing development.
  • Set Follow-Up Meetings: Schedule future check-ins to review progress, address new challenges, and reinforce the application of DiSC principles.

Check in with others

  • Solicit Feedback: End the session with a feedback mechanism to gauge participants' experiences, learnings, and suggestions for improvement.
  • Personal Check-Ins: Consider individual follow-ups to offer personalized support, address specific concerns, or deepen insights.
  • Celebrate Progress: Recognize and celebrate the achievements and progress made by the team as they apply DiSC insights to improve their dynamics and performance.
